"My memory of purple martins is in connection with the old wooden boxes near farmhouses here in the Ozarks. As an artist who prefers to express a personal view of birds, I have created this painting as a means of reflecting those early memories. The birds are in the subdued light of late evening, when the sun has dropped below the horizon but is still striking billowing thunderstorm tops in the east. I eliminated landscape in the painting in order to accentuate the connection between martins and sky."
