There are 5 species of
Hummingbirds common to North
America and 9 species of Orioles.
The Allen's, Rufous,
Anna's, Costa's and
Ruby-Throated hummingbird.
They are migratory and are
benefited greatly by people
placing hummingbird feeders
out for them to drink
hummingbird food or
Hummingbird nectar. Orioles
are also known to take a sip
from hummingbird feeders
though they will devour jelly
in an orile feeder.
Hummingbird necter is easy to
make using 1 cup granulated
sugar and 4 cups of boiling
water.
(Never use anything except
granulated white sugar)
For Orioles, smooth grape
jelly is best, but they also
enjoy orange marmalade or red
cherry, strawberry or even
raspberry jellies. Always
offer jelly in small dishes,
like the oriole feeders we
sell or offer in a hollow
orange rind or smeared on an
orange half. The orioles will
love it! NEVER offer sugar
free jellies; it is the sugar
that gives the birds the
necessary energy and calories
they need.
